Sandra Hansen

Sandra Hansen became an environmental artist in 2014 after an agricultural disaster in Lake Erie killed thousands of fish. Her alarming research on water pollution showed how plastics got into our drinking water, fish stomachs, and strangled fish and sea creatures with nets, ropes, and plastics in the rivers, lakes, and seas. Hansen switched from oil painting to paper making and began making large papers to explain the immensity of the issue of plastics in water. Many of her papers included plastics she found on beaches around the world. Hansen’s papers grew ever larger- first to 7 feet then, 16 feet. Her largest piece is a 38-foot, life-size humpback whale. Hansen’s work grew into an installation where viewers walk through an underwater-like space with paper sea creatures caught in plastic.

Hansen lives in Holland, Michigan. She attended Kendall College of Art and Design for both undergraduate and graduate work. She has traveled to 30 countries for artist residencies, teaching, exhibitions, vacations, and museums.
