Publication date: 04/02/2024

Examines how, from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, Chinese writers and translators encountered, translated, and reshaped Russian literature and culture through the intermediary of the Japanese language.

By focusing on Pushkin’s The Captain’s Daughter, this talk traces how the work traveled from Russia to Japan and then to China, and how various intentions and strategies of translators intersected along the way.

How does a story written in one language change as it crosses borders? And what perspectives does tracing this dynamic process offer for thinking about translation today?

This event will be conducted in a hybrid format, with the speaker joining online and the talk live-streamed in real time at the venue.

The talk will be conducted in Chinese, with Japanese interpretation provided.
